James W. Gleeson World War I collection

Scope and Contents

Sergeant James W. Gleeson was from Merced, California, and served in the 363rd Infantry during World War I. This collection is comprised of three of his diaries written between 1917-1918. Also in the collection are photos of Gleeson as a child, a group photo of his infantry at Camp Lewis, and a group photo of the infantry's reunion in 1958.

John Gould Ornithological collection

Scope and Contents

This collection comprises 38 individual hand-colored proof-plate lithographs by John Gould (1804-1881). The lithographs are from the "Birds of Europe" and "The Birds of Great Britain," published by John Gould, and printed by Taylor and Francis, London. The lithographs from “Birds of Europe” were created between 1832-1837, and the lithographs from “Birds of Great Britain” were created between 1862-1873. Each print is sized at 21.5 by 14.5 inches.

Beginning in 1864, they launched a salmon canning industry that spanned the Pacific coast from California to Alaska. The G. W.
