Scope and Contents On February 19, 1942, President Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066. This order led to the forced internment of Japanese Americans, most of whom were United States citizens. 3,699 innocent men, women, and children were incarcerated at the Turlock Assembly Center on the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds between April 30th and August 12th of 1942, due to the order. The Mercantile Company, a dry goods and general store serving the Turlock area, occupied the building at the southwest corner of the Broadway and Main Streets intersection in downtown Turlock for several decades. The collection contains account ledgers, bank deposits, memorandums, and store policy and procedures, 1919-1968.
